Editor’s Note: This is cross-posted at Live Music Blog. Also, if you’ve been checking out my posts here at LMW, you’re bound to hear some familiar tracks featured in this new podcast, as it’s focused on Brothers Past. I wasn’t kidding when I said they’d have to be in the next podcast. Enjoy!

Back in December, I was lucky enough to catch a reunited Brothers Past play a killer NYE show outside of Philly. With their original drummer, Rick Lowenberg, back in the mix, BP reminded me why I became such a fan of their unique brand of live electronic dance music.

As I’ve been getting back into working out and running a bit more frequently, I realized I was low on new workout tunes to get me motivated. As a result, I decided to put together another version of our Hippie Workout Mix, this time with a focus on the badass beats of Brothers Past.

BP’s precise drum and bass beats and layered polyrhythms give this mix an extra kick in terms of intensity. In fact, on my test runs with this thing, it was often pretty difficult to keep up. I have no doubt it’ll get you moving.

Enjoy:

the original high energy tracks: 10 year anniv. of Disco Biscuits 4-9-99

I thought I’d honor another anniversary on the site today. This one is especially timely, as it played a key role in the creation of this site.  Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the Disco Biscuits pivotal show at the Trocadero in Philly. Although 4/9/99 is a great show in its entirety, there’s a particular song segment that requires the most attention on this site: “Above the Waves > Basis for a Day.”

4.9.99 “Above the Waves > Basis for a Day” (workout edit)

I can’t exactly remember when I first heard this song segment — probably sometime in 2000-2001 — but it played a huge role in my interest in this band that unfolded in the years to follow. It also marked a key point where I started listening to Disco Biscuits live recordings during my workouts. The pure energy and exhilaration of their concerts can be employed perfectly as a fist-pumping soundtrack for a great cardio or weightlifting workout.

Even after so many years, this song segment still gets me totally fired up. The outro of “Above the Waves” is dark and meandering, providing plenty of energy and enough musical exploration to keep you enthralled.  But it’s the last couple minutes — as “Above the Waves” fully morphs into the ending of “Basis for a Day,” — that really make this thing tick. It has single-handedly possessed me to drop into an all-out sprint on several occasions.

As the band delves into the happy, major chord jamming of “Basis,” they proceed to boost the energy level in gradual steps. As they build up the momentum towards the high notes that mark the peak of “Basis,” guitarist Jon Gutwillig drops an all-out guitar assault, shredding out the song’s ending as if possessed by some guitar demon that won’t let him end it until everyone in the Trocadero is dripping in sweat.

As with other song segments, I’ve spliced these two songs together and edited them down to the meat of the improv for workout efficiency. Hopefully, these tracks inspire other folks to hit that peak sprint on their next run.

For the entire 4/9/99 show or the unedited tracks, head over to the Live Music Archive.

Also, don’t miss Rich Steele Chrfis Killian’s interesting concoction from this same recording. He spliced together the beginning section of “Basis for a Day” (which was transitioned to another song) with the ending jam posted above to form what he calls a “Bionic Basis.” As it turns out, the “Bionic Basis” is also great for workouts:  get it here

high energy tracks: bumpin more brothers past – 1-30-04 Astphadel

PICT2599

Wow! This track just blew me away. It started out as a mellow dub outro of  “Astphadel”  (which is also a mellow tune). Then, all of the sudden, the band drops the the dub and morphs into drum’n'bass (as it can so easily do), and bam, we’re off to the races and absolutely bumpin! The energy doesn’t let up for about eight solid minutes even as the band finally starts making cues that it is jamming into “A Wonderful Day” (when they start teasing the intro with the  “sleep” vocals). I edited this one down to the meat of the improv section for easy workout efficiency. Enjoy:

Let’s just say this one is definitely on the list for the next Hippie Workout Mix.

high energy tracks: brothers past 3/27/04 five-year anniversary

PICT2552

Today marks the five-year anniversary of the first time I caught a Brothers Past. As luck would have it, it turned out to be one of their better shows of 2004, if not ever. Lots of solid drum’n'bass improv and some serious electronic experimentation.

Although the entire show is great, especially for a nice workout, this song segment is my favorite:

Watch out for that ‘Tinman’ improv, it’s dynamite. At one point, Tom Hamilton (lead guitar/vox), proceeds to loop his vocal howls and then immediately tweak them with his Kaoss Pad sampler, all over the top of some deep, dark drum’n'bass.  And the jam our of “Forget You Know Me” is definitely not to be overlooked. All good tracks to get the blood flowing but also keep your ears intrigued.

Enjoy.

Hippie Workout Mix, Vol. 3 – Phish

Editor’s Note: I originally created the Hippie Workout Mix back when I was writing for Live Music Blog. It was a tongue-in-cheek take on great tunes that were spliced together to help get you movin’. I was really inspired by the great reaction I got from posting these mixes. In fact, these were really what inspired the creation of this website, so I thought I’d post all the original podcasts from Live Music Blog as is. Hope you enjoy.

With all the excitement of the recent announcement of Phish’s reunion, it may seem a bit odd that our Phish Friday posts have calmed down a bit here on the site. Although Justin and I have definitely been a bit nuts in our day jobs, to be frank, we have also gotten a bit burnt out on it doing Phish Friday posts. A few weeks ago, we basically hit a wall and decided that there was so much good stuff going on out there that we didn’t feel like we could keep up. Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts has been rocking out great compilations, the Coventry blog is collectively kicking some butt, and Scotty B’s HT Phish spin-off, You Enjoy MyBlog is tracking all things web and Phish. Considering this blog was founded back in ‘04 basically after Justin’s post-Phish show epiphany that “nobody was blogging about Phish,” it is honestly great to see other sites really taking this on in full swing and digging in to the band’s long history of amazing live shows.

Although our Phish Friday posts may be a bit less frequent these days, we are certainly not calling it quits. With that in mind, I decided to mix together two of my favorite types of posts — Phish Fridays and Podcasts — and piece together a new version of our Hippie Workout Mix with some of my favorite moments of Phish improv, spliced together with a nice, mellow workout in mind. Believe it or not, a while back I used to run to this band’s music all the time. There is something about a perfect Phish jam and a good run that works really well together; call it zen or something. But whether you’re really up for that long workout or just want a really killer DJ-style Phish mix, this should definitely suit your needs.

Enjoy:

Try to guess the exact tracklisting in the comments section, and perhaps we can dig up something Phish-related for the winning guess. Be sure to include both song name and show date. Here’s a hint…there are exactly eight tracks.

Also, be sure to check out previous Hippie Workout Mixes, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, for a little bit more energy and intensity.

Have a killer weekend!

A while back, I put together a little workout mix of some high-energy improv by the Disco Biscuits and added a tongue-in-cheek name just to have some fun. Although we knew it was a decent mix, Justin and I have been surprised at the warm reception we’ve gotten from it.

As a result, we’re back with another version of the “Hippie Workout Mix.” Per your recommendations we’ve lengthened this version substantially. Beyond that, we definitely stuck with the original theme: splicing together moments of high-energy improv to get you off your butt and really moving.

As we’re getting closer to the Spring season, I am trying to focus on getting back in better shape for soccer season. As a result, I’ve been piecing together some tracks from the archives, specifically creating mixes geared towards my workouts.

I know I’m not the only one who listens to a lot of live music for exercising purposes. I bet lots of you have those choice tracks that include just the right amount of live concert energy to push you a bit further, lift a little more weight, or go that much faster. That raw energy of the concert experience can really do wonders for a workout.

With that in mind, I bring you the first in a podcast series known as Hippie Workout Mix. I’ve subtitled Volume 1 “Triumphant Bisco,” as I’ve spliced together a bunch of seriously energizing tracks by the Disco Biscuits.

Although the name is tongue-in-cheek, the musical motivation from these cuts is definitely no joke. Enjoy…

high energy tracks: extended workout by “helicopters”

elipticalThis version of the Disco Biscuits’ “Helicopters ” from October 2000 literally doubled my cool-down run this afternoon. Although I was hurting from my first soccer game of the season from this past weekend, I couldn’t help but stay on the eliptical an extra 10 minutes just to finish out this track.
