Editor’s Note: This is cross-posted at Live Music Blog. Also, if you’ve been checking out my posts here at LMW, you’re bound to hear some familiar tracks featured in this new podcast, as it’s focused on Brothers Past. I wasn’t kidding when I said they’d have to be in the next podcast. Enjoy!

Back in December, I was lucky enough to catch a reunited Brothers Past play a killer NYE show outside of Philly. With their original drummer, Rick Lowenberg, back in the mix, BP reminded me why I became such a fan of their unique brand of live electronic dance music.

As I’ve been getting back into working out and running a bit more frequently, I realized I was low on new workout tunes to get me motivated. As a result, I decided to put together another version of our Hippie Workout Mix, this time with a focus on the badass beats of Brothers Past.

BP’s precise drum and bass beats and layered polyrhythms give this mix an extra kick in terms of intensity. In fact, on my test runs with this thing, it was often pretty difficult to keep up. I have no doubt it’ll get you moving.

Enjoy:

Hippie Workout Mix, Vol. 3 – Phish

Editor’s Note: I originally created the Hippie Workout Mix back when I was writing for Live Music Blog. It was a tongue-in-cheek take on great tunes that were spliced together to help get you movin’. I was really inspired by the great reaction I got from posting these mixes. In fact, these were really what inspired the creation of this website, so I thought I’d post all the original podcasts from Live Music Blog as is. Hope you enjoy.

With all the excitement of the recent announcement of Phish’s reunion, it may seem a bit odd that our Phish Friday posts have calmed down a bit here on the site. Although Justin and I have definitely been a bit nuts in our day jobs, to be frank, we have also gotten a bit burnt out on it doing Phish Friday posts. A few weeks ago, we basically hit a wall and decided that there was so much good stuff going on out there that we didn’t feel like we could keep up. Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts has been rocking out great compilations, the Coventry blog is collectively kicking some butt, and Scotty B’s HT Phish spin-off, You Enjoy MyBlog is tracking all things web and Phish. Considering this blog was founded back in ‘04 basically after Justin’s post-Phish show epiphany that “nobody was blogging about Phish,” it is honestly great to see other sites really taking this on in full swing and digging in to the band’s long history of amazing live shows.

Although our Phish Friday posts may be a bit less frequent these days, we are certainly not calling it quits. With that in mind, I decided to mix together two of my favorite types of posts — Phish Fridays and Podcasts — and piece together a new version of our Hippie Workout Mix with some of my favorite moments of Phish improv, spliced together with a nice, mellow workout in mind. Believe it or not, a while back I used to run to this band’s music all the time. There is something about a perfect Phish jam and a good run that works really well together; call it zen or something. But whether you’re really up for that long workout or just want a really killer DJ-style Phish mix, this should definitely suit your needs.

Enjoy:

Try to guess the exact tracklisting in the comments section, and perhaps we can dig up something Phish-related for the winning guess. Be sure to include both song name and show date. Here’s a hint…there are exactly eight tracks.

Also, be sure to check out previous Hippie Workout Mixes, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, for a little bit more energy and intensity.

Have a killer weekend!

A while back, I put together a little workout mix of some high-energy improv by the Disco Biscuits and added a tongue-in-cheek name just to have some fun. Although we knew it was a decent mix, Justin and I have been surprised at the warm reception we’ve gotten from it.

As a result, we’re back with another version of the “Hippie Workout Mix.” Per your recommendations we’ve lengthened this version substantially. Beyond that, we definitely stuck with the original theme: splicing together moments of high-energy improv to get you off your butt and really moving.

As we’re getting closer to the Spring season, I am trying to focus on getting back in better shape for soccer season. As a result, I’ve been piecing together some tracks from the archives, specifically creating mixes geared towards my workouts.

I know I’m not the only one who listens to a lot of live music for exercising purposes. I bet lots of you have those choice tracks that include just the right amount of live concert energy to push you a bit further, lift a little more weight, or go that much faster. That raw energy of the concert experience can really do wonders for a workout.

With that in mind, I bring you the first in a podcast series known as Hippie Workout Mix. I’ve subtitled Volume 1 “Triumphant Bisco,” as I’ve spliced together a bunch of seriously energizing tracks by the Disco Biscuits.

Although the name is tongue-in-cheek, the musical motivation from these cuts is definitely no joke. Enjoy…
